Theo van Hoytema (1863-1917) is one of the most popular Dutch artists from the Art Nouveau era.
He is especially known for his atmospheric and highly decorative picture books and calendars, which he personally executed in color lithography. He mainly drew his subjects from nature. Although largely self-taught, he quickly developed into the foremost draftsman and graphic artist of animal scenes in our country.

Van Hoytema was very versatile: besides books and calendars, he made paintings and several dozen separate lithographs in black and white; he produced advertising prints and magazine covers, and he designed embroidery, ceramic decorations, and wood carvings on furniture.
Works by him are included in collections of all major museums in the Netherlands.
