This volume of the Miniatures Series outlines the world of the four great Dukes of Burgundy, from Philip the Bold, who became Duke of Burgundy in 1363, up to Charles the Bold, who fell before Nancy in 1477.

Philip the Bold added part of the Netherlands to his territory through his marriage to the Flemish heiress. His son John the Fearless (1404-1419) and his grandson Philip the Good (1419-1467) expanded this territory through clever politics, making the Burgundian realm an important player on the Western European stage, demanding serious consideration from other rulers. After the death of Charles the Bold, the territory came under Habsburg influence because his only daughter was married to the German Emperor's son Maximilian.

The dukes not only left their mark politically on the late Middle Ages but also culturally; the Burgundian period was of great significance, as is evident from the preserved miniature and painting art. After a chronological chapter titled The Four Dukes, several thematic chapters address various aspects of the Burgundian era.
