ABOUT THE ARTIST, FIEP WESTENDORP:

Sophia Maria (Fiep) Westendorp (Zaltbommel, December 17, 1916 – Amsterdam, February 3, 2004) was a Dutch illustrator, best known for the drawings of Jip and Janneke. Besides Jip and Janneke, Westendorp also illustrated the Women's Page of the Parool and the books of Annie M.G. Schmidt, Mies Bouhuys, and Han G. Hoekstra, among others. Additionally, she illustrated advertising campaigns and created murals. Her legacy is housed in the foundation 'Fiep Westendorp Foundation'.

From a young age, Westendorp wanted to become an illustrator. Therefore, after secondary school, she attended the Royal School for Arts, Techniques and Crafts (KTA) in 's-Hertogenbosch and subsequently the Academy in Rotterdam. In 1937, she received her first assignment: illustrating the VVV guide of Zaltbommel. Westendorp discontinued her studies after the bombing of Rotterdam in May 1940, when the academy was destroyed.

Early in the war, Westendorp lived with Clara Eggink and J.C. Bloem and illustrated for the magazines Cinema and Theater and De Zakenwereld. From 1942, she lived with her parents in Zaltbommel, where she worked on forging identity papers and created situation drawings of the Waal riverbank for the Allies.

Through Adriaan Roland Holst and Simon Carmiggelt, after the Liberation, she ended up in Amsterdam working for Vrij Nederland and Het Parool, for which she made weekly illustrations. At the journalist café Scheltema, Westendorp met Annie M.G. Schmidt in 1947. This was the start of a lifelong friendship. Their legendary collaboration began in 1952 with the adventures of Jip and Janneke on the children's page of Het Parool. From 1952 to 1957, the adventures of Jip and Janneke appeared weekly in this newspaper. Westendorp chose the silhouette style for illustrating the stories. Between 1976 and 1984, she redrew all illustrations of Jip and Janneke. They remained silhouettes but became more compact in shape and cleaner in line.

Later, Westendorp illustrated Pluk van de Petteflet, Otje, and Floddertje. She also illustrated the book Rijmpjes en versjes uit de nieuwe doos by Han G. Hoekstra and created advertising drawings for companies including KLM.

For Mies Bouhuys, from 1957 to 1968, she made the illustrations of the cats Pim and Pom, successors of Jip and Janneke on the children's page of Het Parool. During the archiving of Westendorp's drawings, these illustrations were rediscovered in plastic bags in a bathroom cabinet. The more than a thousand illustrations of Pim and Pom form the basis for the animated series The Adventures of Pim & Pom. The series won the 2010 Cinekid Award for best children's program.
